Walk-In Tub vs. Transition Tub: Which One is Best For You?

Here at HandyPro, we feel it’s important to share our knowledge and expertise to our clients so they can make well educated and informed decisions. This week, we’re going to explain the difference between walk-in tubs versus transition tubs. Although they both have fairly similar concepts, there are some key features of each to consider that can make all the difference when looking at safety and accessibility.

Walk-In Tub

A walk-in tub is the most common tub design of the two. This tub type has a door that swings in, causing you to have to turn around and close the door behind you and then sit down and fill your tub. This type of tub has a simpler door mechanism and takes up no additional space in your bathroom since the door swings inward. With the inward swinging door, this could make entry and exit more complicated for the person bathing. Also consider that in an emergency, the door cannot be opened until the tub is fully drained.

Transition Tub

A transition tub has a door that opens outward and is easier to get into. Transition tubs make access and safety easier. As you get older, you lose your mobility and losing mobility means getting into a tub can suddenly become a hassle. A transition tub accommodates people with limited mobility, improving your access and safety. Transition tubs do require additional bathroom space to accommodate for the door and since it is an outward swinging door, the mechanism for the locking the door may be complex. This tub type can be opened quickly in an emergency and is easier to enter and exit.
